23. Bawang Merah & Bawang Putih - Jawa Timur

Long ago, in a village called Dadapan village, there lived a woman named Mak Janda Dadapan. She has a biological girl named Bawang Merah and a stepdaughter named Bawang Putih. While Bawang Putih's is long dead.

Mak Janda Dadapan treatment against these two children is very different. Bawang Merah are very spoiled. She work is just preening and lounging. While every day, Bawang Putih should be working hard cleaning the house, washing, and cooking.

One day, Bawang Putih was washing in the river, without realizing it, a piece of clothing belonging to the Bawang Merah drift. At home, Bawang Putih scolded and beaten by her stepmother.

"Find the dress ! Do not return until you find it!" Said Mak Janda.

Bawang Putih out of the house and walked down the river with tears. Her stomach is very hungry because not eaten since morning. Finally, she met a grandmother who was washing the rice in the river. The grandmother said she found the clothes Bawang Putih and Bawang Putih invited to her house.

Arriving at the house of the grandmother, Bawang Putih helping the cook. After the work is finished, she went to the grandmother to say goodbye.

"It was night, my granddaughter... You'd better spend the night here first. Tomorrow morning, you should bring the clothes home. I'am you killed the tiger of the night" said the grandmother.

The next day, Grandmother gave the clothes are washed away. Before leaving home, Grandma gives her a pumpkin as a sign of gratitude.

Bawang Putih is very happy to receive a gift from Grandma and gave it to her stepmother Mak Janda Dadapan.


Mak Janda Dadapan immediately divide the pumpkin. She was surprised at the pumpkin filled with jewels and gold jewelry are very beautiful. Mak Janda Dadapan and Bawang Merah are very happy because they become a wealthy woman.

However, both are thought to get more treasure. They also make a plan. Bawang Merah washed in the river. In a way it's looking for clothes, she met with Grandma. The grandmother also find clothes Bawang Merah drifting.

Bawang Merah follow the grandmother to her house. Arriving at the house, Grandma asked Bawang Merah for help in the kitchen. However, Bawang Merah did not want to help her because she was lazy. The grandmother angry and told to go home and Grandmother did not forget to give Bawang Merah a souvenir of a very large pumpkin.

Bawang Merah are receiving flask were full of joy and rushed home. Arriving at the house she was welcomed by her Mother. And they divide the pumpkin. But what a surprise because the contents of the flask containing scorpions and centipedes are venomous bite that instantly scattered both to death.

Bawang Putih is very sad at the loss of her step- mother and sister. Due to the kindness and sincerity of her heart, ask for her hand to be a Prince, his wife and they lived happily until death.

Dahulu kala, disebuah desa yang bernama desa Dadapan, hiduplah seorang wanita bernama Mak Janda Dadapan. Ia mempunyai seorang anak kandung bernama Bawang Merah dan seorang anak tiri bernama Bawang Putih. Sementara Bapak kandung Bawang Putih sudah lama meninggal.

Perlakuan Mak Janda terhadap dua anaknya ini sangat berbeda. Bawang Merah sangat dimanja. Pekerjaannya hanya bersolek dan bermalas-malasan. Sementara setiap hari, Bawang Putih harus bekerja berat membersihkan rumah, mencuci, dan memasak.

Suatu hari, Bawang Putih sedang mencuci di sungai, tanpa disadarinya sehelai baju milik Bawang Merah hanyut. Sesampainya di rumah, Bawang Putih dimarahi dan dipukuli oleh sang Ibu Tiri.

“Cari baju itu! Jangan pulang sebelum kau menemukannya!” ujar Mak Janda.

Bawang Putih lalu keluar dari rumah dan berjalan menyusuri sungai dengan berurai air mata. Perutnya sangat lapar karena sejak pagi belum makan. Akhirnya, ia bertemu dengan seorang nenek yang sedang mencuci beras di sungai. Si Nenek bilang ia menemukan baju Bawang Putih dan mengajak bawang putih kerumahnya. 

Sampai di rumah si Nenek, Bawang Putih membantu si Nenek memasak. Setelah pekerjaannya selesai, ia mendatangi si Nenek untuk pamit. 

"Hari telah malam, cucuku... Lebih baik kau bermalam dulu disini. Besok pagi, kau boleh membawa bajumu itu pulang. Nenek khawatir kau diterkam harimau malam-malam begini” kata si Nenek.

Keesokan harinya, Si Nenek memberikan baju yang hanyut itu. Sebelum meninggalkan rumah, Si Nenek memberikan Bawang Putih sebuah labu sebagai tanda ucapan terimakasih.

Bawang Putih sangat gembira menerima pemberian dari Si Nenek dan memberikannya kepada Ibu Tirinya Mak Janda Dadapan. 

Mak Janda Dadapan segera membelah labu itu. Ia sangat terkejut karena labu tersebut penuh berisi emas permata serta perhiasan yang sangat indah. Mak Janda Dadapan dan Bawang Merah sangat senang karena mereka menjadi orang yang kaya raya. 

Namun keduanya berpikir untuk mendapatkan harta lebih banyak. Mereka pun membuat rencana. Bawang Merah menghanyutkan sebuah baju ke sungai. Dalam perjalanannya mencari baju itu, ia bertemu dengan Si Nenek. Si Nenek juga menemukan baju Bawang Merah yang hanyut.

Bawang Merah mengikuti si Nenek kerumahnya. Sesampainya di rumah, Si Nenek meminta Bawang Merah untuk membantunya di dapur. Namun, Bawang Merah tidak mau membantu Si Nenek karena memang ia pemalas. Si Nenek marah dan menyuruh Bawang Merah pulang dan Si Nenek tidak lupa memberi Bawang Merah oleh-oleh sebuah labu yang berukuran sangat besar.

Bawang Merah menerima labu tersebut dengan penuh suka cita dan bergegas pulang ke rumah. Sesampainya di rumah ia disambut gembira oleh Ibunya. Merekapun membelah labu tersebut. Namun alangkah kagetnya karena isi labu tersebut berisi kalajengking dan kelabang yang berbisa yang langsung berhamburan menggigit keduanya hingga tewas.

Bawang Putih sangat sedih karena kehilangan Ibu dan Adik tirinya. Karena kebaikan dan ketulusan hatinya, seorang Pangeran meminangnya untuk menjadi Istrinya dan merekapun hidup berbahagia hingga akhir hayat.
